Tips for Holiday Cocktail Success
After testing hundreds of cocktail recipes and years of holiday hosting, I’ve learned what separates a stressful cocktail hour from a seamless one. Here are my best tips for making Christmas cocktails without overwhelming yourself!
- Prep the night before: You can juice your citrus fruits, make your simple syrups, and even measure out your spirits for some batch drinks. It’s helpful to keep labeled containers in the fridge. You can even slice up citrus slices to prep garnishes.
- Master the batch cocktail: This is key to holiday entertaining. Drinks like Christmas Punch, Holiday Punch, and Pomegranate Punch are simple to pour together right before the guests arrive. Pitchers like Apple Cider Sangria and Pomegranate Mojitos can be made hours ahead.
- Don’t forget the non-drinkers: Having mocktail options is just as important as your alcoholic drinks. My Cranberry Mocktail and Mulled Cider (without rum) are crowd favorites. I try to make sure they look just as festive as the cocktails so non-drinkers feel included in the celebration.
Pairing Christmas Cocktails with Food
Here are some fun ways to add drinks to your Christmas parties. Just a reminder, pick only one of these options for your meal (remember to drink responsibly):
- For Christmas appetizers and cheese boards, pair with bubbly aperitif-style drinks like the Cranberry Aperol Spritz, French 77, or Kir Royale.
- With dinner, I typically serve wine, but if I’m doing cocktails, I go for something that won’t compete with the food like a Poinsettia or Pomegranate Gin Fizz.
- For after dinner drinks, try Peppermint Martini, Gingerbread Martini, or Kahlua Hot Chocolate can actually serve as dessert themselves.
- At brunches, champagne cocktails are my go-to like the Christmas Mimosa, Poinsettia, and Pomegranate Prosecco Sparkler are all light enough to enjoy in the morning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some cocktails are perfect for advance prep, while others are best made fresh. Punches, sangrias, and batch cocktails like the Christmas Punch or Holiday Punch can be made several hours ahead and actually improve as flavors meld. Cocktails with carbonation (like mules and spritzes) should be assembled just before serving.
For most cocktails, simply multiply the ingredients by the number of servings you need. I usually make pitchers in batches of 8-10 servings. For the Christmas Mule recipe, I’ll multiply all ingredients by 8 and combine everything except the ginger beer in a pitcher. Then I pour about 3-4 ounces in each glass and top with 4 ounces of ginger beer. This method works for most simple cocktails.
Most of these cocktails don’t require fancy tools. For shaken drinks without a cocktail shaker, you can use a mason jar with a tight-fitting lid: though I’d recommend a cocktail shaker: they’re pretty inexpensive. For muddled drinks, use the back of a wooden spoon.
Absolutely! Many of these cocktails work beautifully without alcohol. The Christmas Punch, Cranberry Mocktail, and Mulled Cider are specifically designed to work both ways.
